How to Prepare a Tech Pack for a Clothing Manufacturer
A tech pack is a production document that translates a garment concept into measurable instructions. The more complete the document, the fewer assumptions the factory has to make.
1. Style identification
Give the garment a style number and working name so files and samples can be matched correctly.
2. Technical drawings
Include front, back and important detail views. Mark closures, seams, pockets and other construction elements.
3. Measurement chart
List the finished measurements and tolerances. If grading is required, define the size range and grading logic.
4. Fabric and trims
Specify composition, weight where relevant, color, lining, closures, buttons and decorative materials.
5. Artwork and branding
Provide label files, placement, dimensions, care text and hang-tag or packaging requirements.
6. Construction notes
Document seams, stitch expectations, finishing and any special techniques such as pleats, gathers, embroidery or sequin placement.
7. Packaging
Define folding, polybag, carton or retail packaging expectations if relevant.
Final check before sending
- Is every measurement clear?
- Are units consistent?
- Are fabric details complete?
- Are colors referenced?
- Are labels and artwork attached?
- Is the target quantity clear?
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a tech pack for every style?
A dedicated specification for each style is recommended because details such as measurements, materials and construction can differ.
Can I send only a reference image?
You can, but the manufacturer may still need measurements, fabric, construction and branding information before a sample can be finalized.
Should the tech pack include packaging?
Yes. Packaging requirements should be documented when retail or export presentation is important.
